Is the law of attraction biblical? What Bible Verses Show

Written by Terencio White

In a world where spiritual values often intersect with personal development principles, many ponder, Is the Law of Attraction Biblical? This article explores into this intriguing question, offering insights that align with Christian faith, Biblical principles to provide clarity on the subject .

Is the Law of Attraction Biblical?

To address that question, I want to differentiate between our thoughts on the law of attraction and our occasional engagement with it. The words I am searching for are a mystical, strong type of belief in the law's definition of attraction.

This may distract us from understanding what manifestation truly is and how it connects to our world and reality. I strongly believe that the law of attraction revolves around our mindset and how we perceive and interact with the world from our own perspective.

Let's also note that there are more than one law in universal terms and focusing on just this one law and how it pertains to the bible is not the full story.

WWJD (What would Jesus Say?)

"Recalling the profound words of Jesus in John 10:34, 'Is it not written in your Law, "I have said you are gods"?' - a statement echoing the divine affirmation found in Psalm 82:6, 'I said, "You are gods, and all of you are children of the Most High."'"

Jesus Christ and Law of Attraction Concepts

Harmonizing Spiritual Teachings with Universal Laws

We have to start with Jesus to provide additional context on what manifestation principles are just due to the close correlation to miracles.

The teachings of Christ, offer a profound perspective on the concepts similar to the Law of Attraction. This section delves into the alignment between Christ's wisdom and the universal principles of attracting what we hold in our thoughts and beliefs.

The Power of Faith and Belief

Christ emphasized the power of faith and belief in his teachings. He often spoke about the importance of having faith, not just in a higher power, but also in the ability of that faith to shape our reality.

This concept resonates closely with the Law of Attraction, which teaches that belief is a key component in manifesting desires.

Matthew 21:22, Jesus says, “And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.”

Visualization and Positive Affirmation

Throughout the Gospels, he teaches the importance of positive thinking and visualization, a core principle of the Law of Attraction. He encouraged people to visualize the fulfillment of their needs and to maintain a positive outlook. This aligns with the practice of visualizing positive outcomes and affirming one’s desires, as promoted in the Law of Attraction.

The Role of Intention and Action

His teachings also highlight the importance of intention and action. He taught that good intentions, combined with corresponding actions, lead to positive outcomes. This is similar to the Law of Attraction’s principle that positive thoughts must be coupled with positive actions to manifest desired results.

Aligning with the Higher Good

One of the most significant aspects of his teachings is the emphasis on aligning personal desires with the greater good and the will of God. This is a crucial distinction from some interpretations of the Law of Attraction, which sometimes focus solely on personal gain. Jesus encouraged his followers to seek not only personal fulfillment but also to consider the impact of their desires and actions on others and the world.

Concepts and Biblical Principles: A Comparative Analysis

The Law of Attraction, popularized by figures like Oprah Winfrey and Rhonda Byrne (The Secret), centers on the power of positive thoughts in manifesting desires. In contrast, Biblical principles, rooted in the teachings of Christ Jesus, emphasize faith, prayer, and surrender to God's will. How do these two viewpoints intersect, or do they?

Positive Thinking and the Word of God

Aligning Mindset with Scripture: Gods Word often talks about the power of thoughts and words. For example, Proverbs emphasizes the influence of positive energy and a cheerful heart. However, unlike the Law of Attraction's focus on personal gain, the holy text's approach is more about aligning with God's way and seeking spiritual wholeness.

Concept of Manifestation

Is it in Line with Christian Faith? The concept of manifestation, suggests that by visualizing and believing, one can bring desires into reality. This seems to find a parallel in the Biblical notion of faith — where trusting in the unseen is pivotal. However, the holy book also cautions against materialism and self-centered desires, calling for a reliance on God's provision.

The Role of Faith in Shaping Reality

Faith in the Biblical context is trusting in God's sovereignty and His plans. It's a departure from the Law of Attraction's emphasis on human ability to shape reality.

Sovereignty of God vs. Creating Your Own Reality: Christian doctrine teaches that God is the ultimate authority, and His will prevails. Many people often view this belief in God's sovereignty as contradictory to the principle of the Law of Attraction, which promotes the idea of being your own god and using your mind to shape reality.

Biblical Teachings on the Power of Beliefs: The importance of belief, notably in salvation and trust in God is highlighted within the scriptures. This aligns somewhat with the Law of Attraction's principle of belief shaping one's experiences. However, the Biblical viewpoint attributes outcomes to divine intervention rather than individual control.

Renewing of Your Mind: A Biblical Approach to Positive Thoughts: The verses talks about the renewing of the mind (Romans 12:2), which can be seen as a call to adopt positive, godly thinking. This aligns with the Law of Attraction's emphasis on a positive mindset but within the framework of seeking God's guidance.

Spiritual Realm vs. Physical Reality in Christian Doctrine: Christianity acknowledges a spiritual realm that influences physical reality. This idea could parallel the Law of Attraction's notion of a universe responding to thoughts. Christianity attributes control to God, not the individual's mindset or desires.

The Historical Intersection of Religion and the Law of Attraction

Is the Law of Attraction Biblical:Origins of the Law of Attraction

The concept of the Law of Attraction, often perceived as a modern philosophical idea, has roots that can be traced back to various religious texts. Even though the term itself is not explicitly mentioned, several biblical passages in Christianity imply ideas similar to the 'Law of Attraction'. These passages often revolve around the power of belief and the importance of maintaining a positive outlook.

Biblical Parallels

Certain verses and parables echo the Law of Attraction's principles.

Mark 11:24 states, "Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours."

This verse highlights the significance of belief and visualization, core elements of the Law of Attraction. The teachings of Jesus and other biblical figures frequently emphasize faith, belief, and the power of one's ideas and words.

Theological Perspectives on the Law of Attraction

Diverse Religious Views

The Law of Attraction concept is not unique to Christianity; it finds varying degrees of resonance across different religions. For example, in Hinduism, the Law of Karma shares similarities with the Law of Attraction, emphasizing the return of actions. Buddhism also speaks of the power of the mind and intention. Each religion offers a unique perspective, contributing to a broader understanding of this concept.

Christian Scholars' Opinions

Among religious scholars, opinions diverge on aligning the Law of Attraction with biblical teachings. Some theologians argue it complements biblical principles, emphasizing God's desire for believers to have an abundant life. Others caution against its materialistic and self-centric nature, which could diverge from biblical teachings on humility and reliance on God's will.

Applying the Law of Attraction in a Faith-Based Context

Practicing the Law of Attraction principles can be harmonized with religious beliefs. This might involve integrating prayer and scripture reading into visualization practices, ensuring that their focus aligns with their faith and values.

Ethical and Moral Considerations

However, ethical dilemmas may arise when blending the Law of Attraction with religious doctrines. Questions about the pursuit of material gain versus spiritual growth and the interpretation of God's will versus personal desires are crucial considerations for believers.

The Influence of Negative Thoughts and Positive Outcomes in Biblical Context

Balancing Negative and Positive Aspects

The Bible and the Law of Attraction both acknowledge the power of thoughts. While the Bible doesn't explicitly talk about 'attraction,' it emphasizes the impact of positive and negative thinking.

Philippians 4:8 urges believers to think about whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable.

This aligns with the Law of Attraction's focus on positive thinking to manifest good things. However, the Bible also warns against the perils of negative emotions, illustrating that negative experiences often arise from a pessimistic mindset.

The Concept of Faith and Health: A Biblical and Attraction Law Perspective

Physical Health and Spiritual Well-being

The passages often link physical health to spiritual well-being, as seen in 3 John 1:2. This notion resonates with the Law of Attraction's emphasis on the health of the mind and body. Both perspectives suggest that a healthy mind contributes to physical wholeness.

The role of the Holy Spirit in guiding and influencing one's health choices also aligns with the Law of Attraction’s principles of maintaining a positive outlook for physical and mental health.

Biblical Concept vs. New Thought Movement: Different Paths?

Distinguishing Between Biblical Teachings and New Age Thoughts

The New Thought movement, which heavily influences the Law of Attraction, often diverges from traditional Biblical concepts. While the Bible focuses on the sovereignty of God and adherence to His Word, the New Thought movement, and by extension, the Law of Attraction, places more emphasis on the individual's power to manifest their reality.

This distinction is crucial for believers seeking to reconcile the two, as it highlights the fundamental differences in the approach to spirituality and manifestation.

The Role of Faith Leaders and Their Interpretations

Modern faith leaders like Joel Osteen have sometimes blended biblical teachings with the Law of Attraction principles. Many Law of Attraction followers find resonance with Osteen, particularly due to his positive and prosperity-focused messages.

It's essential to critically examine these interpretations to ensure they align with the core teachings of the Bible.

Analyzing Biblical Verses in the Law of Attraction

Direct Correlations Between Scripture and Attraction Principles

Some proponents of the Law of Attraction cite Bible verses to support their beliefs. For example, the concept of 'reaping what you sow' (Galatians 6:7) is often compared to the Law of Attraction’s principle of like attracts like.

The biblical focus on faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains (Matthew 17:20), parallels the belief in the Law of Attraction that firm belief can manifest desires. However, it's crucial to contextualize these verses within the broader message of the Bible, which often centers on trust in God rather than the universe or a higher power.
